2008 mazda mazda6 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Zoom-zoom in the family sedan. introductionthe mazda 6 (or mazda6, as the manufacturer prefers) is the mid-size sedan for the driving enthusiast. The mazda6 looks leaner than its competitors, and the driving experience confirms the impression, with agile handling and responsive engines. The mazda6 feels tighter in corners and holds the road better than the toyota camry, honda accord or nissan altima. It's lighter on its feet and stops quicker. In short, it's more of a driver's car. For 2007, mazda made anti-lock brakes (abs), electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), traction control, and side-impact and side-curtain air bags standard across the mazda6 lineup. A comprehensive three-year/36,000-mile warranty covers all but routine-wear items. All are well equipped.  additionally, there's the base-level 6i sport, offered only as a sedan 18,990), but still equipped with air conditioning; cruise control; six-speaker am/fm/cd audio; tilt and telescope steering wheel; power windows, mirrors and door locks with remote keyless entry; a 12-volt power outlet; automatic headlight shut off; variable intermittent windshield wipers; rear window defogger; and 215/50 all-season radials on 17-inch alloy wheels. A five-speed manual transmission is standard; a five-speed automatic 900) is optional.  the 6i sport ve sedan 19,750) and hatchback 20,750) add a body-color grille; side sill extensions; eight-way power driver's seat; in-dash 6-disc cd/mp3 changer; and leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob and parking brake handle. New for 2008 is a standard security system. Again, a five-speed manual is standard, but the optional automatic is a six-speed 950). Sirius satellite radio 430) and a cassette player 200) are optional on all models. A remote engine starter 350) is available only with automatic transmission. About a dozen accessories are also available, including several cargo-organizing options 40-50), wheel locks 50), and an auto-dimming mirror/compass with 275) or without 200) homelink.  safety features that come standard on all models include abs, ebd, traction control, and a full complement of air bags: advanced dual-stage front, side-impact, and side-curtain. New for 2008 is a tire-pressure monitor. walkaroundthe mazda6 is among the sportiest of the midsize sedans. Visually, it has more personality than the accord and other family cars. It has a strong front-end treatment that's consistent with other mazdas. Cat's-eye headlamps and big, multi-element tail lamps enhance the action at each corner of the car.  the mazda6 benefits from a kind of muscular conservatism inside and out. Everything in, on and under this car makes sense, and it all looks good doing it. The relationship of the lower body to the upper body looks perfect, yet the roof shape is designed for people, not for style. Its sporty profile makes the mazda6 look smaller than it is.  mazda last freshened its look for 2006, with new headlamps, revised tail lamps, new front and rear bumper fascia, and new side sills that added more edge to the styling. Headlight housings are clear or smoked-black, depending on model and body style.  the shape of the mazda6 is truly fetching when painted a hot color. The basic sport sedan is handsome, and its dual oval exhaust outlets are a nice, sporty touch. The outside door handles are well designed and easy to grab. As mazda says, it looks fast even when standing still; and yet casual observers may not notice the difference between the 5-door and the sedan. A stiff chassis is a key element to achieving sharp handling and a smooth ride. interiorthe front seats of the mazda6 are comfortable through a wide range of adjustments. We found them suitable for hard driving, with good upper body support and enough lower back support with the optional lumbar adjuster for all-day comfort. The rear seats are quite accommodating, whether in the sedan or hatchback. Switchgear is labeled well, legible during the day and illuminated in red at night. The heating/air conditioning system is easily controlled by three big knobs. The bose radio does not look upscale, however, with shiny black buttons that are flush-mounted and similar in appearance. The seat heater switches are tucked away on the center console. Lots of open and covered storage is available, and the seat pockets and door pockets are huge. Cup holders are provided in the front and rear center consoles as well as in the door pockets.  the trunk of the sedan measures 15. 2 cubic feet, and the compact, lateral-link rear suspension allows for a perfectly flat trunk floor. The trunk lid is designed with hinges that do not impinge on the storage space. The standard 60/40 split rear seat folds to expand luggage space. The release levers are in the trunk for security and the seat backs are spring-loaded so they fold instantly with just one pull of the release.  the 5-door hatchback's rear liftgate opens to reveal a covered cargo compartment with 22. 1 cubic feet of space, nearly 50 percent more than that of the sedan. Cargo space more than doubles to 58. 7 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded, which is a hair more (yes, more) than in mazda's cx-7 suv/crossover. The 60/40 split seats fold with the touch of a button, and no need to remove the head rests, revealing a nearly flat cargo floor. Cargo tie-downs and two hidden compartments in the side panels add versatility. driving impressionwhen it comes to sporty handling, the 2008 mazda6 is among the best in the class. 2008 mazda cx-9 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The cx-9 is a crossover, meaning a vehicle with suv-type ride height and carrying capacity, but with significantly better fuel economy, ride quality, and handling than a truck-based suv.  the cx-9 can carry seven six-foot people, thanks to a third-row seat designed with adults in mind. The surroundings are handsome. And while it was easy for a 5-foot, 6-inch woman to climb into the cx-9, the seating position is high enough that the driver looks straight over at drivers of traditional suvs. The cx-9 is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, providing a nice option for those who worry about snowy travel in hilly areas. Properly equipped, it can tow 3500 pounds.  what sets the cx-9 apart are its sporty looks, and the road manners to back them up. The cx-9 responds quickly to the driver's requests, feeling surprisingly enthusiastic about travel on a serpentine two-lane. It now boasts 273 hp and 270 pound-feet of torque. This refined, 24-valve v6 was designed by ford and is built in ohio before being shipped to japan where the cx-9 is assembled. It works with an impressive six-speed, japanese-made automatic transmission, which can be shifted manually if the driver is interested in some frisky motoring.  safety is enhanced by electronic stability control, which helps the driver maintain control on slippery surfaces, roll stability control, and curtain airbags, which provide head protection in a side-impact crash. The cx-9 has received five-star ratings from the u. Air curtains are low-pressure airbags that come down from the ceiling to cover the side windows in all three rows. The idea is to provide head protection in a side-impact crash. Studies and crash tests have shown such head protection can significantly improve the chance of surviving side-impact crashes, which are particularly deadly because there is so little metal to protect the occupants of the vehicle being struck. The air bags mounted in the front seats are designed to provide chest protection in a side-impact crash. Optional all-wheel drive adds a measure of driving safety in slippery conditions. walkaroundmazda has presented the cx-9 as a substitute for either a conventional sport utility vehicle or a minivan. And mazda has made sure it looks like neither.  the cx-9 is not a longer version of the five-seat cx-7. The mechanical underpinnings are different and the structures of the two vehicles are not related. The cx-9 shares some components with the five-passenger ford edge, although the mazda is longer, by 2 inches of wheelbase and 14 inches overall. In fact, the cx-9 is the largest mazda ever. Its overall length of almost 200 inches makes it nearly a foot longer than the 2008 toyota highlander or the 2009 nissan murano. What is perhaps most surprising about the cx-9 is that it doesn't look big from the outside.  the cx-9's nose features a huge mazda insignia and prominent, flared fenders that lead a character line heading back and slightly upward just below the windows. The roof arches, crests and then slides back and down. One surprise is a pronounced bulge in the tailgate, like an old-fashioned bustle. It is a neat trick that adds a little extra storage capacity.  safety researchers say the strength of the vehicle's body is also crucial in providing protection in a side-impact crash. Mazda took this into consideration, providing b-pillars that are extra wide and strong. (the b-pillar is the second roof pillar back from the windshield, which uses the a-pillar.). interiorclimbing into the mazda cx-9 reveals some surprises. The first is that it is so easy to climb into the front seats. The second is that the seating position is as high as in most suvs, providing the driver with a good look down the road. The third surprise is the amount of room inside.  carrying seven people means two up front, three in the second row and two in the third row.  we found a 6-foot, 4-inch driver could be comfortable in the driver's seat, then move back to the second row and still find enough legroom; that's with the adjustable second-row seat in the middle position. The second row is split 60/40, and either side moves fore and aft almost five inches. That allows a nice amount of flexibility in carrying people and cargo of different sizes.  then, without moving the second-row seat, we climbed into the third row and found adequate head and legroom for that same 6-foot, 4-inch driver there, too. To get to the third row, grab the handle built into the top of the second-row seat and pull. That releases the seat and slides it forward. The opening is smallish, in part because the wheel arch intrudes. The look is upscale, and nothing about it says boring family transportation.  up front, all the basic driving controls are simple and easy to use.  a small storage bin between the front seats and relatively thin storage compartments on the front doors provide some cubby storage.  mazda says there is 17. 2 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row upright. There's not much more than the trunk of a mid-size sedan, and to use it all would require piling luggage up to the roof, blocking the rearward view. Nevertheless 17. 2 cubic feet gives the cx-9 a significant advantage over the toyota highlander, which has 10. 3 cubic feet behind its third row and 2. 5 inches less legroom in the third row. To carry more stuff and fewer people, the mazda's third row (a 50/50 split) can be lowered by pulling a strap. Gravity does the work. With both sides down the result is 48. 4 cubic feet of space. Getting the seat back up requires pulling the same strap, which we found easy to do.  the second row can also be folded down easily. However, it doesn't create a completely flat cargo area. There is a slight uphill slant.  the tailgate when open does not have a 6-foot, 4-inch clearance, we discovered, and there is nothing like a good rap on the forehead to brighten the day. driving impressionmazda's place within the ford motor company family is to provide the sporty vehicles, those with the zoom-zoom, as mazda likes to say. That's easy to do with a two-seater like the mx-5 roadster, but it becomes a challenge with a seven-passenger vehicle that weighs over 4,500 pounds in its all-wheel-drive version. 2008 mazda cx-7 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Zoomy crossover suv competes with cr-v. introductionthe mazda cx-7 fits neatly into the zoom-zoom mold: sporty but functional; roomy but svelte; snappy but comfortable. We found it fun to drive, with responsive handling and good high-speed stability.  mazda introduced the cx-7 for 2007 as a totally new crossover utility vehicle to compete against the toyota rav4 and honda cr-v, among others. Crossovers, as they're called, have become the hottest segment in the auto industry. They combine the high seating position and cargo capacity of a truck-based sport utility vehicle with the agility, smoothness and fuel economy of a car. And many folks who find a minivan or station wagon just to ego-bruising seem okay with a crossover.  as the cx-7 was all-new for 2007, very little has changed for the 2008 model year. There has been some fiddling with the option list and, thanks to some reprogramming of the engine management, premium fuel is now recommended rather than required, so it will run on regular gas. The cx-7 still starts at less than $24,000 for the front-wheel-drive version. A well-equipped, nicely featured, all-wheel-drive model goes for less than $30,000; and the top model with every option box checked comes in just around $35,000. The transmission is a six-speed automatic with a sport shift feature. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is optional 1700).  the least expensive cx-7 is the sport model 23,750). Air conditioning and cloth upholstery are standard, as are cruise control and the usual complement of power windows, mirrors and locks. A power driver's seat with manual lumbar support is available 350), and must be ordered with most other major options. Two more factory-configured packages are available on all three models: the moonroof/bose audio/6cd changer package 1585) includes a tilt-and-slide power moonroof and a nine-speaker bose sound system with vehicle speed-sensitive audiopilot and a six-cd, in-dash changer. All cx-7 models come with three-point seatbelts (so be sure to use them), adjustable head restraints at all outboard seating positions, and rear-seat child safety seat anchors (latch). Which is much the case with the cx-7, especially the front end.  for starters, the fenders are seemingly transplanted directly to the cx-7 from the company's sports car, the rx-8. To fit those bulbous wheel housings to a sedan-like body required pinching the nose and squeezing headlights into the tops of the fenders. This leaves substantial mass below the bumper line that's only slightly lightened by a massive mouth braced by large intake-like recesses that double as housings for the optional fog lamps. The way the cx-7's bulk is suspended across its exceptionally wide track (distance between the tires side to side) leaves it looking almost as if it's drooping, or sagging, from the weight.  the side view appeals more, with wheels pushed to the corners and a super-fast windshield sweeping back over tautly drawn side glass. Side mirrors separate the front door glass from an odd-looking, wind-wing-like, but fixed, tiny piece of glass at the base of the a-pillar. The beltline rises as it moves rearward, peaking just aft of the severely blistered rear wheelwell before tucking in between the steeply sloped backlight and the sculpted back end. Full-round, easy-to-grab door handles ride the crest of a soft bulge connecting the tops of the fenders. An understated crease highlights the lower door panels, skipping over the rear tires to continue around the bottom fold of the rear bumper.  the rear aspect is somewhat plain, with a modest spoiler sitting atop the backlight, itself resting in a gentle dip in the liftgate. A rather large, seamless bumper stretches the width of the back end, above a widespread pair of exhaust tips, this last a feature that's beginning to wear. It works on a vehicle boasting a robust powerplant under the hood, preferably a v8 or some other v-configuration, where each pipe nominally runs directly back from its individual bank of cylinders. But for draining burnt gases from an inline engine, especially an inline-4, and one sitting transversely, to boot, it's a bit overdone. A single pipe, or maybe two running tightly parallel and exiting out one side, seems more fitting. interiorthe interior makes no less of a statement than the exterior, and with much the same result. Some parts seem to work, others not so well. Importing styling elements and even components from other mazdas no doubt makes sense in terms of cost savings and even consistency of so-called dna but doesn't always yield the desired harmony in look, feel, and function.  the dash is a prime example. Some parts look right, while others come across almost as an exercise in design 101, and not much of it looks of a piece with the rest. For starters there's what mazda calls the double-roof instrument panel. Translated, this constitutes, first, a ridge stretching across the top of the dash that's supposed to make the front seat passenger feel included in the interior's dynamic. Below this floating lip is the second part, a more traditional dash construct comprising three elements: the instrument cluster, the center stack and the section holding the passenger airbag and housing the glove box. This lower part, the designers say, is intended to play to the driver, concentrating on the interfaces necessary for managing the car. All the pieces for this are there, so the job is doable, but the way everything is put together doesn't make it all that easy or appear that seamlessly integrated.  beyond the quirky design, the instrument cluster is deeply hooded, stylishly compartmentalized and softly lit to the point where it's not a quick and easy scan. The steering wheel, borrowed directly from the sporty mx-5 miata with its much more confined cockpit, feels undersized in the more expansive interior of the cx-7.  large buttons and knobs populate the stack of air conditioning and sound system controls in the center, but their arrangement and assigned functions are far from intuitive. The optional navigation system only adds complexity, as it incorporates many of those functions into one of the menus accessed only through the touch-screen lcd and, for example, allows switching preset radio stations by exchanging the map display for the audio display. 2008 mazda mazdaspeed3 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sporty with worldly charm. introductionthe mazda3 is a true world car. It's space-efficient and exciting to drive like a european car. It's practical and economical like a japanese car. And like an american car, it's available with a surprising list of comfort and luxury features.  the mazda 3, or mazda3, was developed on three continents, by various international subsidiaries of the ford motor company, which owns 33. 4 percent of mazda motor corporation. Volvo developed the mazda3's body. Ford itself contributed the suspension design and sophisticated electronics. This is a premium automobile, exciting to drive, styled adventurously, and fully equipped with luxury features. There's nothing austere, basic or cheap about it. The seats are supportive and comfortable, good for long drives.  sedan and hatchback versions look quite different. The five-door hatchback is like the high-fashion station wagons from european manufacturers, offering the practicality of the five-door configuration with an emphasis on a premium driving experience. The mazda3 is a good choice for drivers who have friends or lots of stuff: the sedan and hatchback excel at back-seat roominess when compared with the honda civic and other competition, and the hatchback excels at cargo space.  there's a high-performance version called mazdaspeed3, motivated by 263 turbocharged horsepower.  launched as a 2004 model, the mazda3 was extensively updated and upgraded for 2007, with a revised appearance inside and out. Reinforcements to the body shell improved overall chassis rigidity. Suspension damping was re-tuned to quicken steering response and reduce understeer. Anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist were made standard for all s-models and optional for the i-model. Traction control and stability control became available. And an auxiliary audio input with 12-volt power outlet made the mazda3 ipod-friendly. All-season 195/65hr15 tires mount on steel wheels. The 3s sport hatchback 17,925) is similarly equipped, but rolls on 205/50vr17 tires on 17-inch alloy rims. A long list of extras, including the cd changer 500) and sirius radio 430), can also be installed as dealer accessories.  the mazdaspeed3 sport hatchback 22,430) comes with a 263-hp turbocharged 2. 3-liter inline-4, six-speed manual transmission, limited-slip differential, sport seats, aluminum pedals, unique red-and-black cloth interior trim, and 215/45yr18 tires. The only significant factory option is the navigation/sirius package 1950), although again, dealer-installed accessories are available.  safety features that come on all mazda3 models include front airbags, an energy-absorbing brake pedal, and a tire-pressure monitor. Anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist are standard on 3s, as are side airbags and head-protection curtain airbags. All of these features are offered as a package 395) on 3i models with air conditioning. The designers worked hard to give this car the kind of character that will set it apart from other compact cars, and the result is a surprisingly bold look. The whole front fascia is unique, and the rear taillights and chrome exhaust tips set it apart as well. Big 18-inch cast-aluminum wheels clearly identify this as a high-performance car. interiorwhen it comes to compact cars, the game is all about space efficiency. The mazda and the honda are close in front-seat room, with mazda providing a bit less leg room but a bit more width. In the rear seat, however, the mazda is significantly larger, most notably in leg room and shoulder room. The back of the rear seat doesn't quite fold flat, but it's close. Thanks to this design, the mazda3 five-door will accommodate 43. 8 cubic feet of cargo behind the front seats when the second seat is folded down.  the mazda3 seats themselves are supportive without being confining, and the use of high-quality foam in the bolsters makes them very comfortable during long drives. Every version of the mazda3 except for the entry-level sedan features a height adjuster for the driver's seat, and this works with the standard tilt/telescoping steering wheel to enable a wide range of drivers to get a good fit with the controls. For 3s, a brushed aluminum surface lends some drama to the dashboard, as do red-orange electro-luminescent numerals with blue-tinted dials. Mazda 3i sedans feature wood trim for the dash and white-faced instruments.  the mazda3 affords plenty of practical storage space, notably a cavernous glovebox. Two cupholders are integrated into the center console, while a small but deep box separates the seats. The navigation system's controls are located in the center console, however, and they're small and fussy enough (especially the joystick control) to be a chore to operate. But the mazda3 is one of the very few cars in this price class to offer a navigation system.  the mazdaspeed3's interior has the same overall look as its siblings, bu.
